Nissan Repair: 2000 Infiniti I30 timing chain replacement, timing chain replacement, competent mechanic

Question
I have a knocking (clicking) sound on the left/passenger side of the engine that my dealer told me was a timing chain (175K miles).  They want about 2K to replace.  I have a fair amount of mechanical ability and repair lots of stuff around the house and vehicles, but have never torn into an engine.  Is this a realistic DIY repair? I'm not sure the car is worth the cost to have the dealer replace.  Thanks.

Answer
Hi Bruce -

To be very honest, this is a very detailed and drawn out repair to an engine. The entire front part of the engine has to be removed, and you will need a fair amount of the right kind of tools. There are a lot of alignment marks that need to be precise and accurate when replacing the belt(or chain), where you will have even deeper problems if it is off. To me, not worth the headache for the weekend mechanic.

I would look for a competent mechanic, try to avoid the dealers, and look for repair shops that specialize in Nissans. To me the cost should be closer to the 1K range.

Hope this helps -
