Nissan Repair: Nissan mistral/Terrano wont start, nissan mistral terrano, quality diesel fuel

Question
Hi,

I've got a Nissan Mistral/Terrano R3-MR 2.7 Turbo Deisel 1994 AUTO. Jap import to UK.
About a week ago it would not start this lasted 4 days and i was trying to get it started everyday, on the 5th day it suddenly started up, and i drove it for 2 days with multiple stops and starts no problems and ran like a dream.
On the second of the 2 days i parked it up and went out to start it again to go to the shop, it would not start no matter how much i tried.

The engine turns over no problem and sounds like it wants to start, i have got smoke coming out the exhaust when cranking it so presume fuel is getting through, i have cleaned all the engine wiring loom block conectors and sprayed with WD40, Tested the glow plug relay which is working fine, checked the voltage on the glow plug busrail and that is fine.

Someone mentioned on another thread that the problem they had was an engine stop switch on park and neutral, but i'm sure the engine would not crank over if it was that, please correct me if i'm wrong.

I've ordered new glow plugs which should be hear in 2 days, i don't think they will solve the problem because on day to of it running it was still warm when i went to start it again.

I eagerly await your reply

Answer
Rob,

You can check the glow plug circuit by probing the port and seeing if you are getting voltage to the terminal.  This will be for a short time at start up.  No glow plug, when it is cold outside, and you will know the relay is failing or the fuse is blown.  What I think is going on, by the black smoke you mentioned, is that the fuel pressure regulator is sticking, on occasion.  When you say it did not start when it was warm is the tell that something else is going on and I think this will be the regulator and be sure to replace the fuel filter.  Also, from my previous experience with diesel engines, I would purchase a quality diesel fuel treatment and add it to a full tank of quality diesel.
