Nissan Repair: 89 nissan d21 wiper linkage bushing, nissan d21, white caps

Question
Calvin,

My wiper linkage bushing on this 89 Nissan d21 is broken. I need a wiper linkage bushing "cap", made out of black nylon (apparently) I bought this vehicle and the wipers don't work because this cap is missing.  I checked with Dorman, and they make a white bushing cap, which they claim goes on this truck.  The salvage yard also sold me the entire linkage set, with white caps, claiming it goes on this truck.  Imagine my surprise, when I removed my linkage, and discovered I had black caps.  My ball diameter is much smaller, and the white caps are much to large.  What is going on?  I can't find these black caps anywhere on the Internet.  I just need one new one, although I could use four new ones (replace them all.)  My truck was made in 10/89. If I go with the white caps, which appear to be a vast improvement, then I have to change out the wiper motor (which I dont have, and which may not fit.)  My other option is to make a hybrid system.  I showed my friend what I have, and we both think I should graft the black cap end on to the white cap linkage.  Have you ever run into this problem before?  The nearest salvage yard is 55 miles away.  Any advice would be deeply appreciated.    David.

Answer
Hi David -

yes, there is a smaller size bushing. The best thing is to order from an auto parts store, giving the year and model of your vehicle. That would get you the correct part. Most auto stores stock this item as it breaks a lot. Only a few dollars for a whole set.

When installing, ensure that you place the male side of the bushing into the female side of the link first, and then press the two links together. You might need a plier. If you do it any other way, you will not be able to lock it together.

Hope this helps -
