Nissan Repair: Rear Brakes and Rotors, contact pattern, rear brakes

Question
Hi Again Von,
Quick question: I just changed my rear rotors on my 2001 Sentra SE because they were so rusted and the surface was totally worn.  Anyway, I didn't replace the pads because I assumed that they're okay wear wise.  Now after looking at the contact pattern on the rotors it seems that entire rotor is not in contact with the pads. Part of the rotors are clean and shiny and parts have surface rush.  I guess I was wrong in assuming that I didn't need to change the pads too??  Thanks. Tim

Answer
Tim,

If there is a lot of pad left over you can get away with it and the pad will eventually wear down where it contacts the entire swept area of the rotor.  No bug deal.  If it bothers you replace the pads and you will get complete contact now. Your choice on this one and I would not worry about it.
