Nissan Repair: 1995 pathfinder tranny problem, vehicle speed sensor, torque converter

Question
I just purchased a 95 xev6 4wd pathfinder and it has had a tranny replaced but it acted up shortly thereafter and was parked for nearly 2 years. I bought it 2 days ago and researched how to do diagnostics and the tranny diagnosis was #2 which unless I am wrong is the VSS. My tranny shifts perfectly R 1st and 2nd, but when you try for OD or D it either idles or if you press fuel revs freely. Would the VSS sensor fix this issue or is there something else that can cause this problem. I bought an aftermarlket oil cooler today to install, but I really need the other 2 gears to drive truck to work and back. ANY info woudl be of great appreciation. thanks for your time ADAM

Answer
Adam,

If there is a vehicle speed sensor code replace it and clear the code and see how it does.  This will cause the overdrive and lock up torque converter to do strange things like not applying.  After that, if it still does not work correctly take it to a transmission shop and have the codes checked for transmission specific problems.  Usually, the shift control computer or a solenoid will be the next thing on the list.  Can't say for sure since there are no specific transmission codes indicated.
