Nissan Repair: Air Bag Light, liability reasons, air bag

Question
My Air Bag red light on my 1995 Quest has recently started to blink.  It is a slow constant blink.  I recently turned 100,000 miles on the Odometer and the car has been ecellent.  I did get a new engine block about 70,000 miles ago due to a recall.

Why would this light all of a sudden come on with no apparant reason.

Answer
Bill,

The car is ten years old and the airbag has a battery backup and it has probably failed.  You could go to a shop and have the code read.  Airbag codes along with ABS codes are not usually available to the public for liability reasons.  So, unless you want to spend the bucks to buy a really expensive reader take it to a shop and they can give you the code readout.  Now, understand that the airbag is only supposed to be good for ten years so after that you are supposedly on borrowed time.  I have a Corvette that is older than your Quest and it still is working so it could just be the battery that backs up the system.  The only real way to tell is to have the code read.  Also, understand that the only thing that is going to happen is you Quest is not going to have a working airbag if you do not correct the problem.  The airbag won't go off with the light on or flashing.
