My car will be idling and suddenly the rev counter needle will swing into the red and back to zero, and the engine cuts out. When the car is idling the rev counter reads Zero. I have to wait for approx 1 hour to restart the car, which will then idle for about 10 minutes and then cut out after the rev counter has done as mentioned above

Check the distributor for the presence of oil on the optical shutter wheel.  A shorting distributor will cause the problem you describe.

Another issue with the Sentra is the ignition module (ignitor) a small aluminum box mounted close to the coil.  If it is defective the ignition will do as you describe as well.
