Nissan Repair: Nissan 2003 timming chain, independent mechanic, timing belts

Question
Calvin
I live near Montreal, Canada and I'm the owner of an Altima 2003, 2.5 engine (200 000km). Just been advise that I have a problem with my timing chain. Dealer says I should replace it (1 600$) but independent mechanic I know said I should touch it cause it need to be made by a machine (apparently engine were assemble in Mexico by robots). Are you aware of recall from Nissan? Should I just by and use engine? Any advise?

Normand

Answer
Hi Normand -

This is the first I have heard of what you tell me. First of all, The Altimas have a timing belt, not chain, and they are made in a typical assembly line. Secondly, ask for a breakdown of cost for that $1600, as timing belts can be replaced for a fraction of that cost.

If this is the first time you are replacing the belt on your car, then yes, I would recommend replacement. Normally for Automatic transmission vehicles replacment would be every 100K miles, and for manual, about 60K miles.

What price range you should be looking for is somewhere around $300 - $500, depending on what is being replaced (such as water pump, tensioner, and other components that are accessed with the replacement of the belt).

Hope this helps
