Nissan Repair: 1993 Nissan Sentra Rough idle, nissan sentra, vacuum leak

Question
This little Nissan Sentra has 226,000 miles and is still running strong.  The other day it began to run rough at idle but just touch the gas pedal and it smoothed right out.  It is drivable but not running very well.  My initial thought was gas filter which I changed and still have the same problem.  My next course of action was going to be cap, rotor, wires, and plugs.  Any thoughts on what could be causing this rough idle and while driving very rough but stop and put it in neutral and she seems fine.

Answer
Hi Michael -

Yes, if you have not tuned it up recently, that would be a good idea.

Also check for a vacuum leak. Best way if you cannot visually find it, is to get some carb cleaner in an aerosol can, and sparingly spray different parts of the engine where the vacuum hoses run. If the idle improves, you have found the leak. Might help if you have someone in the car so it can be placed in drive.

Could also be the transmission mount. When it goes, you feel every vibration of the engine. This year Nissan is famous for that.

Hope this helps -
