Nissan Repair: rev limitor @ 2000 rpm, mass airflow sensor, volt ohm meter

Question
1997 Maxima GLE.  Idles fine.  No check engine light.  Will only rev to 2000 rpm.  Has sat for three months.  Checked for mouse nest in air breather, checked for frozen gas line.  Suspect catalytic converter plugged or MAS, but no check engine light.  Suggestions?

Answer
Ross,

The most probable cause is what you describe.  If you get a digital volt ohm meter and a Haynes Manual you can follow the directions for checking the mass airflow sensor.  They usually will not set a code and it will only be found using a meter to probe the connector.  The converter usually will not show a code either but to check it you need someone with a very accurate compression gauge to screw into the oxygen sensor port ahead of the converter to see what the pressure is.  Anything close to 3 PSI and it is plugging.  The other way is to remove the converter and see how it runs.  It is loud but it will show if it works or not.  Now, I do not know if you have a three way converter you have three to choose from.
