Nissan Repair: 1998 Nissan Pathfinder V6, nissan pathfinder, home mechanic

Question
Hey Rob. I just got an estimate to replace the cracked rear main seal and am wondering if I can do it myself. I am a fairly decent amateur at home mechanic but I've never done anything of this scope. If I'm correct, I'd need to drop the drive shaft and pull the transmission to replace the seal?? Any details or advice you could give me would be helpful. Thank you!

Answer
in a nutshell, you are right.  if you are attempting this repair at home, please consider your safety first with the correct jack stands and make sure your vehicle is secure.  its a very involved job and if this also is a 5 speed, i highly suggest changing your clutch/pressure plate/to bearing while you are in there along with universals for the driveshaft.  do your homework, google, www.nicoclub.com, look up all available information online before deciding to go ahead with the job.  if you have a lot of free time, by all means see what you are capable of.  the worst that can happen is you give up and have to pay a tow fee but at least they wont have to take as long taking stuff apart because you already did that so that will save a few bux on labor.  good luck!
