Nissan Repair: 97 nissan pickup will idle for a few seconds then stall, nissan pickup, scan tool

Hello, I have a 97 xe pickup, when I start it up it will idle a few seconds fine then die, if I press the gas pedal it won't rev up it bogs down or if I start it with the gas pedal all the way down it will rev to 2k or 3k then immediately die. I just got the truck so I replaced the old fuel and fuel filter and also the spark plugs. When I replaced the plugs they were totally black. It seems to me that it may be a bad sensor telling the computer to add too much fuel but I don't have access to a scan tool to check for codes. If you could give me some incite it would be really appreciated.

Hi Ande -

If you had a code, the check engine light would be on, is it on? If not, then it is something else.

Have you checked the fuel pump for proper operation and pressure? How about the distributor cap for carbon tracking?
