Nissan Repair: 2000 Nissan Pathfinder transmission in & out of gear, overdrive switch, nissan pathfinder

Question
I have a 2000 Pathfinder with over 200,000 miles on it.  It is a great vehicle, but now when I am driving in overdrive at a steady speed my odometer goes from 2500 RPM's to 3200 RPM's and I let off of the gas it goes back to normal driving.  I have checked the fluids and they seem to be fine.  What could be causing this?

Thank you,

Gary

Answer
Gary,

The overdrive is slipping and causing the transmission to downshift to third gear.  YOu need to take it to a shop and have it looked at.  You are most probably looking at a transmission rebuild if the overdrive switch is not found to be defective.  The two ways one will downshift all by itself is if the vacuum switch for overdrive is defective or if the transmission is slipping.  I like Cottman since they have been good to me over the years.  But, a shop of your choice that is familiar with Nissan vehicles is fine.  Ask around with your friends and see where they have had work done and what their experiences have been.
