Nissan Repair: alternater belt changing, ka24e, stupid question

Question
QUESTION: 1993 nissan pick-up(KA24E with A/C).tried to break loose 14 mm.
in back of alt. it wouldn't no matter what. Can i just use the
tensioner adjuster to get it loose enough to change the belt?

ANSWER: Hi Ron -

Yes, loosening the tensioner bolt and adjustment bolt should do the trick. You should not have to touch the mounting bolts of the alternator.

Hope this helps -

QUESTION: hi calvin,
thanks for your quick response. now for a stupid question..
is the adjustment bolt the one facing the fan which locks the tensioner
bolt in place? the tensioner bolt is almost all the way in so do i back it
up -counter-clockwise-? then pry the alternator forward.
thank you for your time and help.

Answer
Hi Ron -

No such thing as a stupid question.

You are correct. The adjustment bolt faces the front, and the tensioner bolt is on the side. Both need to be loosened to back off the alternator as they are connected. You will probably have to back it off further (counter clockwise) when the new belt is installed because it will be tighter.

Ensure upon reinstall that you tighten the tensioner bolt first and then finish with the adjustment bolt. Do not overtighten. Tighten until a play of no less than one inch can be achieved on the belt.

Hope this helps -
