Nissan Repair: 02 SPEC V FUEL PUMP HIGH PITCH WHISTLE, rubber grommet, high pitch

Question
QUESTION: Hello Mr.Iwashita,

I have a question regarding my 02 spec v and I wonder if you could help me with that.

Two weeks ago, I backed my car onto any car in the parking lot. The cover of the driver side tail light is broken and the driver side rear bumper bracket is also broken.

However, after that, I noticed a high pitch whistle from the back of the car. When I turn the key to the accessory position, it just whistle once, and when the engine is running, the high pitch whistling noise is continuously there. I think it could be related to the fuel pump or fuel filter. When I took the car to a mechanic, he told me it is OK. However, I don't think it is OK so I wonder if you could give me some advice on that, and do you think I will need a new fuel pump, new fuel filter or even fuel tank or so, and could you please tell me about how much will the repair cost?

Thank you very much for your help.

ANSWER: Hi Bo -

Yes, it seems like it is from the fuel pump. That little bump could have dislodged the pump from the rubber grommet, which keeps you from hearing the pump. Although the pump should be OK, it needs to be removed if you are going to re-align the grommet. And, since you have to remove the fuel tank to do that, might as well replace the pump anyway.

Hope this helps -

QUESTION: Hi Mr.Calvin,

Thank you for your reply. I just took the car to a mechanic in the town and he checked the fuel pressure and told me that the fuel pressure is higher than the specification and right now it is 60psi, he told me he did not know what caused the problem and only promise to take a look at that, so I wonder if you could give me some clue based on this high fuel pressure, does it mean a bad fuel pump?

Thank you very much for your help.

Answer
Hi Bo -

Thanks for the information. What I need to know is where the pressure was taken, in the engine area, or by the fuel pump. There is a fuel pressure regulator in line with the fuel tank, so it would matter at what location the pressure was taken. If in the enigne compartment, I would look at the fuel pressure regulator as being the culprit. I do not think the fault is the pump, as far as pressure.

Hope this helps -
