Nissan Repair: ECM reflash/reprogram?, mass air flow, air control valve

Question
My car is a 2001 Nissan Maxima and I just got it back from having to replace a bad Mass Air Flow and idle air control valve. The idle, in park, surges between 1500-2000 rpm. I have gotten told that I need to reprogram the ECM. I was wondering your thoughts on it. I was also told that I might need to replace the ECM. I called the dealer and they didn't have too much useful advice. They told me to bring it in. I'm not sure what I should do. I just need some advice. So please, it would be much appreciated.

Answer
Jammi,

If the ECM needs a reflash it is around $125 bucks at the dealer.  If the ECM needs to be replace due to a defective idle air control valve cooking a relay that is expensive.  You could source a used one and then have the dealer program it to your keys and then have them reflash it to your car.  If the dealer did it all you are looking at $1000 to $2000 bucks.  A used ECM is about $150 and then the reflash to get your keys to work and learn the car.  I would first start by having them hook up their scanner and let you know what the Consult II computer says is the problem.  Email me back and we'll go from there.
