Nissan Repair: 1987 nissan maxima tranny, lockup torque converter, nissan maxima

Question
Hello, I have a 1987 Nissa Maxima that I recently purchased. 76500 miles. I seem to be having a problem in overdrive. It will stutter/flutter at about 45 mph and at 65mph. I let off the gas and it instantly goes away. It only happens when in overdrive. I drained and refilled the fluid twice now and it temporarily cleared up the problem. Fluid was not burnt smelling, but was pretty dark. Is there anything I can do to permanently fix this problem? I assume it's just bad fluid mixing with the new and creating the same problem, but I can only drain about three quarts as the rest stays in the torque converter. If I just have to keep draining and refilling, is there anything that will speed the process along and help get all the old out? Also, what's your feelings on transmission additives...specifically lucas stabilizer and seafoam tran fix?

Answer
John,

Sounds like the lockup torque converter is slipping when it applies.  I would drain a quart and put Trans X in.  A quart should do the trick.  I am not into liquid fix it, in a can, but Trans X works for me.  I have not used Sea Foam but have heard others say it works well too.
