Nissan Repair: Seat Belt Alarm, seat belt alarm, inspection criteria

1994 Maxima GXE.  Intermittenly, with seat belts fastened, the fasten seat belt light and chime will activate for a few seconds, then stop.  Any idea which component might be causing this?

The driver;s side seatbelt receptacle has a switch that turns off the light and chime.  The switch is intermittently shorting out.  For now you could disconnect the wire to the receptacle to make it stop and then replace it.  The connection is located under the driver's seat.  In most states it is the law that the light work so you should check local safety laws for vehicle inspection criteria.  The chime is not a requirement as far as I know.
