Nissan Repair: Camshaft Position Actuator -Infiniti, volvo s80, variable valve timing

Question
QUESTION: I have an I35. Are these codes serious?  Do I need to repair right away?

P0011 - IVT Control (Bank 1)
P0021 - IVT Control (Bank 2)

ANSWER: Christie,

These codes mean the variable valve timing is not working properly.  I would make sure the oil is recently changed and is of the proper viscosity.  5W30 is what is recommended and if that is the case and it is fresh and clean you are looking at changing the actuators for both cams.  rockauto.com or courtesyparts.com for the actuators.  Replace yours and then reset the code by disconnecting the battery for five minutes.  The code should reset.  Email me back if you need more information.

QUESTION: Thank you! One more question. I also have a volvo s80. There is no power in steering wheel controls- Left & right blinker, high beams are not working. What do u think?

Answer
Christie,

The fuses and fuse links need to be tested first.  I would most probably say the control itself has failed since it is a common problem on these.  If memory serves me right the control is from Lucas and it eventually wears out.  But, check the fuses and fuse links first.
