Answer
Hi Laura -

I know this is not what you want to hear, but you will have to take the vehicle in a repair shop to put it on an OBD (On Board Diagnostic). This will pull a code or codes out of the car's computer and then tell you what is wrong.

There are literally hundreds of sensors in the vehicle that monitor engine operation, in the exhaust, intake, transmission, transmission, fuel, temperature, etc. Any one of these will turn that light on if it reads a malfunction. The trick is finding out which. Putting it on the OBD will get that answer then you will know what to do next.

Fortunately most of the time the problem is simple, or not threatening to the vehicle's operation. Since your car is running rough, I would check for the obvious like a vacuum leak.

A lot of the inquirers here at Experts use Autozone. If you have one near you, that might be a way to go.

Hope this helps -
