Nissan Repair: Electrical Smell When Starting Car (Sentra 1999), compressor clutch, parallel circuit

Question
For the last 2 weeks, only in the morning when the car is started cold it starts smelling like a short circuit for a bit.. then the smell disappears a couple of blocks down the road. No A/C or fan on in the morning. In the afternoon on the way back from work there is no smell, even with the fan working.

In addition the fan doesn't work on speeds 1,2,3 only works on 4. And the A/C doesn't work period. From what I was told the A/C compressor clutch wasn't engaging. When I turn the key to contact (electricity only) I hear this noise from the front like something is turning on.. then it clicks and stops after 5-6 seconds. I have been hearing this noise since I had my A/C recharged though which months ago.

The weird thing is that the smell appeared all of last week. Then stopped for 2-3 days then came back on again yesterday. Only thing I can think that was different is that the fan was set to the window position instead of it blowing toward the driver/passengers.

I have checked around the engine for burnt wires, but don't see anything wrong. Any pointers appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Answer
Ico,

The blower resstor has failed and that is where the smell has come from and why the blower resistor needs to be replaced.  Blower will only work on high when this has failed.  The compressor is another matter.  Parallel circuit that runs but cut off tells me that the state of charge needs to be looked at.  Probably too much or too little refrigerant is in the system causing it to turn off the relay that feeds the compressor.  Or, the relay itself could be in need of replacement.
