Nissan Repair: 1996 Nissan Sentra XLE - Removing alternator, nissan sentra, paperclip

Question
Hello,
I need to know how to remove the alternator on my 1996 Nissan Sentra XLE. The brake light and battery light came on and they stay on. I was told there is a diode pack inside the alternator that when it goes bad, will turn on the dash warning lights like this. Is it true you can open alternator & replace bad diode pack with new pack & brushes? If so how difficult is this?

Thanks,

Venus

Answer
Venus,

If you have experience in electronics it is not difficult to replace the diode pack and brushes in the alternator.  That is, if there is a rebuild kit available.  The most difficult part is getting the brushes held in while you put the two parts together.  You need a paperclip to hold the brushes in while you put the two parts together.  Then pull the paperclip out and the brushes spring out and make contact.  To remove the alternator remove the belt and the two bolts holding the alternator.  Be sure to disconnect the battery before you remove the alternator.  Unbolt the batter line and disconnect the plug connector and the alternator is free to remove.
