how do I get to the alternator bolts that hold it in place?

If we are talking about a Maxima the bolts are accessed through the inner fenderwell.  There are two bolts on most Nissan cars.  If yours adjusts you will need to loosen one bolt to get the belt loose and then get to the other one.  On the first one you need to loosen the belt tensioner by unscrewing the center bolt and then loosen the long bolt to release belt tension.
