Answer
Matt,

The safe bet is to remove the airbags.  First, remove the negative battery terminal.  Next remove the airbag fuse.  Wait five minutes.  Now, disconnect the connections at the back of each airbag.  Then, with your body clear of the explosive path of the airbag, remove the bolts that hold them on.  Now, remove the airbags and place face up to prevent accidental launching of the airbag.  It is good to keep them high on a shelf, away from people.  I like to use old milk crates to house them, face up.  They are dangerous and can kill you or break you neck and such.  Be careful.  If you are not sure of how to remove them leave it to a professional.  But, under no circumstances would I do a demo derby if you are worried about airbag deployment.  Check the sponsors rules and go with what they say.  Some want them in the car and some do not.  If you do not have them you are probably looking at a roll cage and restraints along with a HANS, helmet and harness.
