Nissan Repair: 1993 Nissan Pulsar with a high pitch squealing noise, tensioner pulley, power steering pump

Question
Hi there,

I have a 93 Nissan Pulsar which has started making a horrible high pitch squealing noise that almost sounds like a fan belt slipping, BUT it isn't. I have had that checked and have sprayed with WD40. It happens on particulary cold or rainy days, and usually when the car is idling or running slowly, but the noise going away when you put your foot down on the accelerator, and comes back again when the car is going under 40 KM's an hour. What could this be?! It only happens sometimes, sometimes only for a short while, and some times constantly - and then might not happen for weeks inbetween! Im at such a loss!
Thanks for any help

Answer
Nyssa,

It should be a belt!  But, if not, then I would remove all belts and hand spin the accessories.  You could have a power steering pump making noise or the alternator.  Now, there is another place you get that noise and that is the timing belt.  If the tensioner pulley is failing it will make this kind of noise too.
