Nissan Repair: draining fuel, private owner, fuel tank

Question
QUESTION: I brought my altima a month ago, private owner stated car had been sitting up for 2 years I have replaced the water pump system and fuel pump system still car sputters and stall's this is from a diagnosis recommendation but there has to be more but have already spent over $1000 will this car give me alot of problems from sitting for so long especially money wise what else should I be checking for?

ANSWER: Hi Sandra -
A car sitting that long needs to have the fuel drained, fuel system flushed, and filter replaced.

Fuel gets gummy if left too long, and then creates havoc in the engine.

Hope this helps -

QUESTION: How do you draing fuel and then replace it what is the tank cleaned out with once its drained just trying to understand my car and the fuel ssystem part

Answer
Hi Sandra -

The fuel tank has many baffles and compartments, so it cannot be drained effectively by inserting a siphon hose.
What year is your Altima? Check on the bottom of the tank, some may have a drain plug. If not, the only way to effectively drain it is to remove it, and then get the fuel out that way.

Flush it out by putting about a gallon of fuel in the tank, and drain it again. Same time, I would change the fuel pump, because that is in the tank as well. As I mentioned, replace the fuel filter, and that should be good to go.

Let me know how it goes -
