Nissan Repair: Immobiliser unit question, nissan pulsar hatch, nissan pulsar

Question
I own a Nissan Pulsar Hatch (2000 model - in Australia). I recently lost my
keys and tried to use my spare set. The set includes a normal key (without
NATS) but then a separate black, cylindrical shaped, small barrel that needs
to be on the key ring for the car to start (I assume the 'immobiliser').
However, unlike the original set of keys, this immobiliser does not seem to be
registering, the key turns but the car does not turn on at all (the lights on the
dash do not even come on). We have spoken to an automotive locksmith, but
he can't seem to reset the the immobiliser to work with car. I don't know
where to go to next. Everyone else is telling us we just need another key cut,
but we already have 2 spare keys, which both fit, the problem is the car is not
activating. Could you help us?

Answer
Colleen,

There is no on-board programming for a Nissan Key.  You will need a dealer or a locksmith.  The dealer uses a Consult II Scan Tool and the locksmith uses an aftermarket unit to talk to the Body Control Module.  The other option is to find another 2000 Nissan Pulsar, wrecked, and pull the Body Control Module, keys and key cylinders and install them in yours.  Too much money.  When you get another key registered be sure to get an extra cut and put in a safe place.  I have had this ahppen to me before and it is quite expensive.
