Nissan Repair: Belt Replacement, flex head, hi tim

Question
Hi Calvin,
I have a squeaky belt on my 2001 Sentra SE 2.0 with A/C.  I assuming that the belt is probably the one that runs the alternator because it seem to squeak more when there is a load on it.  Anyway, it only slips when starting the car and you can hear it a bit more when it's damp outside.  Can you tell me the best way to access it?  There doesn't seem to be much room to get at the belts.  Anyway, any pointer that you can give will be helpful.

Thanks,
Tim

Answer
Hi Tim -

First of all, my apologies for the late reply. My computer has been down for the last week.

Yes, there isn't much room to work with there, especially if you have A/C. The real trick to replacing or tightening belts is to have to right tools, like a ratchet wrench, and a flex head ratchet handle.

From what you describe, the belt only needs tightening, so the job may be easier. Find the adjustment bolt on the alternator, I think it is 12mm. Loosen it and then get a pry bar and get the alternator to move outward. Be careful not to damage anything. Once the belt is tight, tighten the bolt while holding the pry bar in place. You need not loosen the bottom bolt.

Hope this helps -
