Nissan Repair: ignition lock cylinder, nissan pickup, stupid brother

Question
QUESTION: i have a 97 Nissan pickup and all of a sudden the key wont turn in the lock cylinder. The steering wheel has locked. I was wondering if we need to replace the entire assembly or if there's something easier to do. Also the key i am using is from my brothers 91 Nissan pickup because i have lost my own master key and cant use a copy.

ANSWER: Hi Daniel -

Please clarify something for me -

Are you saying that you were able to use the key from a 91 nissan to work in your car, the 97? Meaning that is has worked in the past?

Please get back to me -

Answer
Hi Daniel -

Gee, this is the first time I heard of the same key fitting in multiple ignitions.

Well, my suggestion is to replace the ignition cylinder, especially if the locksmith messed with it. This way you get a new cylinder, new key, and problem solved with multiple keys.

Just to note that connected to the steering column is the ignition switch, and ignition cylinder. You need not take the assembly off the column to replace the cylinder only. Remove the plastic housing around the column, and find the hole on the side of the ignition cylinder housing. Stick a paper clip in there while pulling the cylinder out (stick the key in to get leverage). It helps if you can turn the key, I think it will come out if you put in the "accessory" position. If you absolutely cannot turn the key or get the cylinder out, then you will have to drill the lock cylinder out.

I hope this helps -
