Nissan Repair: p0325 knock sensor, smog check, knock sensor

Question
I have a 1997nissan altima and cant pass emissions due to code p0325 knock sensor. the engine is running great with no hesitation, stalling etc. no check engine light on. what is up with this code? do i need to replace the knock sensor or is there possibly another problem? i had a bad egr and replaced it and the code is gone on it. is this a part i can replace myself? thanks

Answer
Jay,

Nissan is known for their knock sensors failing out of warranty.  If you purhcase a new knock sensor it is just a matter of removing the old one and installing the new one.  Disconnect the battery for five minutes to clear the code.  Drive the car three times before you go in for SMOG check to make sure the car's computer does not rat you out for resetting the code.  Get a Hayens Manual for photographs and instructions on the changing of the part.  You have a four cylinder so it is a pretty simple change.  If yours was a V6 I would say to take it to a shop...
