Nissan Repair: Sentra Speedometer, pencil eraser, cause and solution

Question
While driving at highway speed, my 2003 Sentra speedometer and tachometer drop to zero for a moment and then recover. This has happened twice in the past two days. Can I expect this problem to get worse? What is the probable cause and solution?

Answer
Kevin,

Either the harness connector at the cluster is not keeping connection or the small transformer, on the back of the cluster is going out.  I would first remove the cluster and clean the contacts with the harness and cluster with a number 2 pencil eraser. That is, use the eraser to lightly scrub the contacts and blow off the dust.  Reconnect and see if the problem goes away.  If not then the cluster will need to be reconditioned as they do not sell the transformer off the back.  You will either need to purchase a wrecking yard unit or send yours off for repair.  Also, you could check ebay or the like to see if you can source a used on off the internet.
