Nissan Repair: 1978 280Z, clutch slave cylinder, clutch master cylinder

Question
Calvin,
Got car inspected, changed oil and drove home about 2 miles after purchasing 2 new tires, ready to go and now the clutch hydraulics are faulting I think.  Would not start or engage into the gears, added brake fluid DOT 3 and now can shift/drive but the clutch is really low and soft. No visible leak.  Able to drive to work but started getting hard to shift after approx. 12 miles to my parking garage at work.  Any ideas?  This is my daily driver.

Answer
HI Yoli -

There are 2 things you will need to check. The clutch master cylinder and clutch slave cylinder.

To check master for leaks - Look behind the master, against the firewall interior of the vehicle over the clutch pedal. If it is wet, your master cylinder seal is leaking. Replace the master and you should be fine.

The slave cylinder is located on the transmission and has a long metal lever that it attaches to, going into the trans. There is a rod that goes into a rubber boot. Take the boot off the slave cylinder. If there is fluid coming out, then replace the slave cylinder.

If there are no leaks above, then the master has an internal leak between seals, so replace the master.

Bleed the system.

Hope this helps -
