Nissan Repair: Oil Change Frequency 2005 Nissan Altima 3.5L, 2005 nissan altima, nissan altima

Question
QUESTION: How often should the oil and filter be changed?

ANSWER: Hi Steve -

My recommendation would be every 7,000 miles. However if you are driving under extreme conditions, such as dust, excessive heat, cold, stop and go traffic, I would go with about 5,000. I do suggest synthetic oil, as it will extend the life of your engine as well as get you better gas mileage.

Hope this helps -

QUESTION: I travel mostly highway 26 miles one way to work and back.  Why would the
dealers not say anything when I take it in for an oil change every 3,000.  Is it
just about the money? :)

Answer
Hi Steve -

You got it!
Back in the day when the cars weren't as mechanically efficient as these days, oil changes were recommended frequently, more to what you are doing now, 3,000. However with the advent of mechnically sound engines and improved oil characteristics and properties, the interim between changes can be increased, especially if you switch to synthetic. Even the platinum and titanium spark plugs are designed to last a few years before replacement.
