Nissan Repair: 1996 Maxima No Start, drive pinion, negative cable

Question
Hi Calvin,

I saw that you offered to provide some diagrams to a poster in November last year. My girlfriend has a 96 Maxima (just Maxima, no other designation) that has trouble starting at times. It couldn't start one day, but started the next. We brought it into a repair shop, paid $1000 bucks or so to have them look at it. They couldn't find the exact cause, but it has worked ever since. Today, the same problem again. The battery is fine (or so it seems because we tried boosting it). I am guessing it is the starter. I tried hammering it to get it going, to no avail. I was wondering if I could get those diagrams from you to replace the starter? If you have any other ideas, it would be much appreciated. Thanks for any help. Brian.

Answer
Hi Brian -

Have some questions -

When you turn the key, do you hear anything? Any dash lights come on? Do the headlights come on bright and strong?

PLease get back to me -
In the meantime, here are the instructions for replacing the starter:

 *   If your testing indicates that the starter must be removed, the first step is to disconnect the negative cable at the battery.
   * It may be necessary to place the vehicle on a lift to gain access to the starter. Before lifting the vehicle, disconnect all wires, fasteners, and so on that can be reached from under the hood.
   * Disconnect the wires leading to the solenoid terminals.
   * To avoid confusion when reinstalling the starter, it is wise to mark the wires so they can be reinstalled on their correct terminals.
   * On some vehicles you may need to disconnect the exhaust system to be able to remove the starter.
   * Loosen the starter mounting bolts and remove all but one.
   * Support the starter while removing the remaining bolt.
   * Then pull the starter out and away from the flywheel.
   * Once the starter is free, remove the last bolt and the starter.
   * Once the starter is out, inspect the starter drive pinion gear and the flywheel ring gear.

Hope this helps -
aloha
