Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): briggs & stratton 14hp vtwin ohv, briggs and stratton, briggs stratton

Question
i have a problem with ride on mower it has a briggs and stratton 14hp vtwin engine.i had to replace ignition switch, the wires were all different so i played around with them with no joy.now i have a genuine switch and have got it to start but i cuts out straight away.it will not run at all with the wire that connects the two coils (i guess this is for the charging system)

Answer
You must be extra careful when messing with the wiring on engines with electric start, because if you accidently send voltage to the ignition coils, you will destroy them, and they are expensive.

Starter switches can look the same, but still be different, so if you have the original switch, look at the back of it, where the terminals are.  There should be letters designating each terminal,
compare it to the one you have on the mower now.

These engines usually have a small solenoid on the bottom of the carb
that shuts off the fuel when the key is turned off, it sounds like that is shutting off when the returns to the run position, which makes me think you may still have the wrong keyswitch.

The charging stator is under the flywheel, and is totally separate from the two ignition coils.

When you turn the key to the "on" position, you should hear a small
click at the solenoid on the carb, if not that is why it won't stay running.

Sorry about the rambling response, but check those things out, and let me know.  Also find me the model numbers off of the engine
and the lawn mower, so I know what you are looking at,
thanks,
