Nissan Repair: 97 Nissan Pickup XE 4cyl Electrical Problems, digital voltmeter, beam headlights

Question
I recently picked up a 97 pickup xe with 104,500 miles.  I put a brand new battery in it.  I drove it 40 miles, and it died on me.  I jumped it off, and it started right up.  I let it run for 10 minutes, killed it, and tried to start again...No start.  I then noticed the alternator and fan belt loose.  I replaced with a new belt, and tightened it up.  I drove it for about 3 hours stop and go (about 10 stop and start cycles) with no problems.  I then take it on a 40mile trip, and get about 35 miles before it dies again.  I jump it off, and it runs fine.

Is this the alternator or something worse?

Answer
Hi Jon -

Looks like the alternator if you ask me. If you have a digital voltmeter, check the battery voltage before starting. Should read between 12.5 ans 13 volts. Start the engine and note once again, should read at least 14 volts. Turn the high beam headlights on, and the voltage, once again should remain at 14.

If this is not happening, then replace the alternator.

If you do not have a digital voltmeter, the system can be checked by any auto repair shop for a nominal fee. Ensure they check the charging sytem under load as well as normal conditions.

Hope this helps -
