Answer
hi john.
i don't want to tell you its a transmission problem from the start.  by stating that, i need you to test drive your car under a few scenarios.  first, take off in 1st gear on the gear selector and it shouldn't change gears.  take off in 2nd gear, and it also shouldn't shift.  if you have a 3rd, try that as well, and also it shouldn't shift.   make sure each gear feels different then the next...1st should take off the fastest, 2nd a bit slower, 3rd even slower.
IF any of these gears take off the same, or they shift into another gear, then you have a loose connection at your automatic transmission computer, or you have a bad transmission computer.  if your transmission was working fine prior, i highly belive that the mechanic who was working on your car forgot to hook something up, or didn't tighten the connection enough.
now with that short story, if this car is a manual, you might need clutch adjustment, short on clutch fluid, have a faulty slave, or master cylinder or you might have broken springs on the clutch.
i hope i gave you some direction.  i wish it was an easy answer.  best of luck and please let me know how this turns out.
