Nissan Repair: 98 frontier, nissan service manual, pencil eraser

Question
i have a 98 frontier 2wd 4cyl 5spd and my gauges do not normally work, i have to smack the dash to encourage them to work and even when they do the speedo is off, my odometer does not read 999999 it just goes blank, also when i turn my lights on the backlight for the gauges and A/C controls does not come on and the lights on the factory radio display go out. i have removed the cluster and cleaned the connectors with a pencil eraser and electrical connection cleaner to no avail, i loved my 96 maxima but since i bought this truck 4 months ago ive had to have engine work due to the interference part of a timing chain go out and dont know how much patience i have left, if it matters my ses and air bag lights are on, can you help me?

Answer
Wyatt,

I would get a cluster from a wrecking yard and replace yours.  It is something like $300 bucks to get yours repaired.  So, a used one is more cost effective.  The timing chain is a normal wear item and you should be rebaselined since yours is now new.  The airbag reset procedure is listed below.  If it does not reset and stays on it means that there is something wrong with the circuit.

Procedure to Reset the Air Bag System Warning Light
According to the Nissan service manual, the steps to reset the air bag system warning light are the fallow:
1.   Turn ignition switch from OFF to ON.
2.   Air Bag warning lamp is on for 7 seconds and turns off, the turn ignition switch OFF within 1 second after the lamp turn off.
3.   After ignition switch is turned OFF, wait for more than 3 seconds.
4.   Repeat steps 1 to 3 twice. (Perform 3 times in total.)
5.   Turn Ignition switch ON.
6.   The SRS lamp has been reset it.
If the warning light can not be reset, more diagnosis will be require. Please contact you Nissan dealer for more information.
