Nissan Repair: manual transmission is dying, shaft bearings, axle bearings

Question
Hello. My 96 Maxima has 157k miles. As of now. My trans makes noise mostly in neutral while engine is running. But in last 2-3 weeks, I now has a fluid leak. Its getting worse everyday. I KNOW mechanic will tell me I need a new transmission. Now the questions???

1) What is going on with my stick shift 96?
2) What are my repair option? How much $$$ can I expect for each option?
3) My 96 is the base (stipped down model), 157k miles. But very nice shape. Clean, everything looks/works great. I need new tires, a windshield, and shocks. Is it worth it to get a new trans. My car is would be worth $3000 in perfect condition.

Answer
Gilbert,

The axle bearings are probably worn and that is allowing the leaking of fluid.  The noise is the input shaft bearing.  The shift bushings are probably worn out and need to be replaced.  It does not need a complete rebuild.  I would replace the input shaft bearings and the axle bearings and replace the seals and the shifter bushings.  While you are at it replace the clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing and pilot bushing.  You have a great car and it is not that much if you find a shop that will just do the above repairs.  That would basically make it a new transmission.  With a new Maxima cresting $30K a couple of thousand to do the transmission and the items you mentioned would be cheap.  Transmission about a thousand parts and labor.  Windshield a couple of hundred.  tires and shocks around $800 and you would be driving a nice car.
