Nissan Repair: SESlight came on., o2 sensors, exact code

Question
I have an 05 maxima. Recently the SES light came on. I took it in to an auto shop they said it is a code 1. Which they say is the O2 sensor or catalytic converter. Is this true? Also, how do you know which one it is? My car has been driving fine with the exception of the light coming on. It came on for like 4 or 5 days then went off for 2 or 3 and now has come back on.... Help! I am a young lady, clueless and don't feel like getting robbed. Thanks.

Answer
Hi Kim -

Sounds fishy to me. Would it be possible to get the exact code? Althogh there are hundreds of possible codes, there is no such thing as a code 1. O2 sensors would run in the P0130 - P0167, or P1140 range or thereabouts. catalytic converter, maybe in the P400's.

You are smart to double check the validity. One of the greatest ripoffs comes when these SES (Service Engine soon) lights come on, and a lot of unnecessary repairs take place. 90% of the time the condition is very minor, and won't affect car performance or driveability.

This is why if you are kind enough to get the exact code for me, I can help direct you -

Hope this helps -
