Nissan Repair: 95 Nissan Maxima requires constant gas to start, nissan maxima, haynes manual

Question
Good Day,

I have 95 Nissan Maxima. The check engine light is on but unfortunately the local mechanics (I've been to 4) are not able read due to the year of my car. When I start my car in the morning I have to give it gas for about 5 minutes (or until it reaches the midpoint between hot and cold) before it will go without stalling. I have to repeat this throughout the day if the car has been off for more than an hour or two. Despite the temperature outside it is about 55 but white smoke comes from the tail pipe as if it were 35.

My mechanic thought maybe it was the temperature switch but it was replace and I am having the same problem. I had tune up, air mixture changed, and had the fuel filter checked but that did not help. I recently had the radiator replaced as well.

Thanks for your help

Answer
Dee,

White smoke indicates water in the exhaust.  I would be concerned about a headgasket leak.  That might be the problem.  Also, there are several temperature switches and if he changed the one in the for the gauge it would not correct a cold start program.  To read the codes you need a small screwdriver and then get a Haynes Manual to read the codes.
