Nissan Repair: air induction system, air induction system, cold air intake

Question
QUESTION: 1988 pathfinder. rotted out filter directly behind right headlight under the hood. do i need to fix or just eliminate?

ANSWER: Harrison,

If you are describing the pre filter box in front of the actual filter you can eliminate it.  The air entering the engine will make more noise since the air enters closer to the cab.  But, if you can live with it go for it.

QUESTION: Was this (air induction system) a factory item or an after market emissions system?

Answer
Harrison,

If you have the factory air box and the intake ducting is rotted out or damaged it can be removed.  If you are describing an aftermarket air intake system just be sure it has a filter where ever it terminates.  If that is under the hood and you are using a cone filter that is fine.  And, if you want a cold air intake system just make sure there is a filter at the end of the line to protect your engine.
