Nissan Repair: 1991 nissan maxima, nissan maxima, transmission overhaul

Question
is there such a thing as a shift sensor?? I'm told its on the side of the transmission, but not sure. The car is for sale, but not sure whether or not to buy it. Owner says when its cold, it shifts fine, but when it warms up, the sensor "breaks down", and tells the trans. to go to low gear.  Does this sound right??   Thanks, Matt

Answer
Hi Matt -

It could be. The TSS (trans shift sensor) does that, however, I would have the current owner replace it and then have you test drive it again. Remember that there is always a reason why people sell their cars, and a lot of times it is to avoid costly repairs. You do not want to purchase this car and end up with a transmission overhaul, which it could be.

Just my 2 cents -
hope this helps -
