Nissan Repair: Carbeurator changed out, carburetor engine, vacuum diagram

Question
I put on a rebuilt carburetor only to find that the truck is idling too fast. I hooked up a smoke machine and discovered a leak coming from a plate that is located at the base of the carb. The plate looks something similar to an outer chain link for a bicycle chain and it is covering 2 rubber seals that are covering the baffle plates on the bottom of the carb. My question is...is it normal to have a vacuum leak in this area. This was not a problem on the old carburetor. Now the engine keeps stalling after I get it running. Also...is is possible to adjust the choke on these carbs?  I would certainly appreciate any help you can offer.

Answer
Don,

A leak is not normal and needs to be addressed.  I would get new baseplate gaskets for the carburetor and make sure the new carburetor is setup the same as the old one.  The choke is an easy adjustment with a step cam and a screw that rests on the cam stop.  Basically, when the carburetor (engine) is cold you open the throttle all the way, engine off.  Now, you check and see if the choke has applied.  If it has not you need to rotate the choke until it applies fully.  Now that that is done you need to start the vehicle and set the choke idle at the specified speed.  Probably around 700 to 800 rpms.  Check the hood sticker or a manual if you have one.  But, you cannot do the choke idle speed until the intake leak is corrected.  Lastly, follow your vacuum diagram to make sure the hoses are connected correctly.
