is the gasket replacement something a handy novice should consider doing--and should I replace both while at it
also a cost estimate of having this done at dealer or other foreign car repair place--thanks and happy T day

You could do it yourself.  I would get a Haynes Manual for instructions.  Also, a tube of sensor safe silicone since any silicone that is not safe will kill your oxygen sensor. A new set of valve cover gaskets for something like $30 dollars.  A shop is going to charge around $200 to $250 for the job.  This is an easy job for your car and it is just a matter of removing what is in the way and then the valve covers.  Clean them up, the mating surfeace, and install the new ones.  Use the silicone on any areas where you have seams.  There is no need to put silicone on the surfaces.  Also, I like 3M Super Weatherstrip Adhesive to glue the new valve cover gasket to the valve cover so it keeps it in place when you install the valve cover to the head.
