Nissan Repair: 99 Nissan Maxima Misfire, nissan maxima, risk engine

Question
The vehicle is a 99 Maxima SE with 148k miles. It has sporadic low  thumping ( 4 or 5 low thumps ) when idling only in drive gear.  Check Engine light not triggered. First diagnosis stated the thumping was a misfire and found rear ignition coils bad causing the misfire. Recommended  replacing 3 coils and all plugs.
Second diagnosis couldn't concur that coils were bad.  Wouldn't recommend a course of action until check engine light is triggered. After the 2nd diagnosis, I am questioning whether I should go ahead with the coils and hope that solves the problem or wait it out to see if the check engine light is triggered

Answer
Chris,

I have a 2000 Maxima SE and Nissan did have problems with the coils.  I replaced all six after replacement of a couple.  Within a couple of weeks others started acting up.  So, I just replaced them all and was done with it.  Also, replaced the plugs while I was at it.  courtesynissan.com is a good and cheap source for coils.  rockauto.com is another.  You can do the job yourself with normal tools and save even more. You could wait but you do not want risk engine damage or melt your converters due to unburned fuel.
