Nissan Repair: Water pump maintenance: I35, coolant system, service interval

Question
QUESTION: Hi. I own a 02 i35, practically same as Maxima. Just wondering if there is maintenance interval w/water pump. Does it need to be replaced at a certain mileage. My other car is es300 which has a timing belt and I change pump when belt is replaced. i35 does not have a timing belt, so I am not sure if it needs to be replaced.

ANSWER: Sean,

The waterpump is inside the aluminum timing cover.  There is a small access plate that has to be removed and another cover to release tension to get to the waterpump.  It acts as an idler pulley for the chain.  No service interval.  But, when it goes water gets into the oil and the car will overheat.  I have a 2000 Maxima and am still on the same pump.  So, you have a couple of years to go at a minimum.

QUESTION: I bought the car used in August (08); it had 114k - now has 122k on the clock. Do you think that it needs attention or should I just leave it alone. Saw some service records and coolant system appears to be maintaned on regular basis.

Answer
Sean,

I would drive the car until the waterpump fails.  If you are concerned you could change it now.  Quite expensive to have done since it is a front wheel drive and there is not much room to get access to the pump or the tensioner through the cover plates.  Your choice here.  Mine?  I am going to run until it fails and then replace it.
