Nissan Repair: 1986 Nissan 200 SX headlights, nissan 200 sx, high beams

My headlights will go off while driving down the road.  The lights are hit and miss when I turn them on low beam, and go off when I put high beams on.  I am leaning toward replacing the combination switch, but I have only found it for $400.  I pulled the headlamps, and put a multimeter on the sockets, and the switched seemed to work.  Help!

Unless you have a loose ground connection I would think the headlight switch is defective.  Check the fuse box and relay box and test by slapping each box, with the lights on, and see if they flicker.  If not it is probably the headlight switch.
