Nissan Repair: jerky acceleration, nissan altima, stoplights

Question
I have a 1996 Nissan Altima,  the last month or so the car has started to idle really low when stopped at stoplights or something and then when I accelerate it is jerky at first until I get going and then it levels out.  Usually once the rpms get above 1000 it's fine.  It is worse when it is cold.  It has never died on me but there are times when feels like the engine could cut out at any moment.  Any ideas of what could be happening?

Answer
Hi Julie -

My first question is when was the last time you tuned up your vehicle? Is the check engine light coming on when the car runs rough?

Sounds like a faulty ignition cable to me, or could be carbon tracking on the distributor cap or rotor.

Let me know, please get back to me -
