Nissan Repair: Trans. shifting problem, vehicle speed sensor, 240sx

Question
Von:  I recently acquired a 93 240SX conv. w/auto. tran.  I have been looking at some other ans. concerning shifting problems.  Infrequently, it does not want to come out of 1st. Otherwise the trans. is smooth.  Do you think the contacts in the cluster is the culprit?  I am leaning toward pulling the speed sensor first.  Thanks, Jack

Answer
Jack,

It sounds like the governor is sticking and not allowing it to shift when in first.  I would first change the fluid and filter and see if that helps.  Nissan builds a tight transmission and gummed fluid will cause what you describe.  I would not think the vehicle speed sensor would cause the problem.  Now, if the speedometer is doing strange things like skipping or sticking I would replace the vehicle speed sensor.  But, change the fuild first.
